After I left Kansas, I went to Kansas City… Missouri! How cool is that?
Before I started working on my Game Design Merit Badge, I assumed it was all online stuff. In the end, it really wasn’t. As part of the badge, I had to design my own game (shocking right?) and play it several times to make adjustments.
I designed my game based on Avatar: The Last Airbender. Many of the pieces were characters from the show. I made them out of clay and put them in their own container. Each player belonged to a Nation. The goal of the game was to see which nation could get to the end fastest. There were nation dice, a game die, a bending die and a battle die. Shaking the appropriate die moved out around the board. The board was designed with winding paths, pitfalls and set back.
The first time we played, it took FOREVER. The dice sent you backward more than it sent you forward. As a result, I changed the meaning of several of the die faces. That made the game go much quicker and made it more fun.
I really enjoyed the badge and have kept my game. Ms. Cheryl was really helpful and made me think about all the different parts of the game and why they work. It is one thing to read it, another to understand it from different views. She makes the best chocolate chip cookies! And told me about Shatto milk! It comes in really weird flavors like root beer and cotton candy. I would also like to thank her and Microsoft for the really cool gift.
