Robotics and Communication

I had the opportunity to visit the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) in Florida.  https://www.mosi.org/  I want to thank Urmila and Chris for making it possible. MOSI is in Tampa Florida. I was able to complete my Communication Merit Badge and my Robotics Merit Badge.

My favorite part of the Communications badge was convincing her to buy tickets to the Red Wings game. Most people aren’t very excited about hockey (I absolutely don’t understand that!!) but she was! AND she was a Tampa fan… so I shared my flyer with her and told her the really great reasons to go to the game. I know that the Wings are not playing well… but they have the best record in NHL history… and we WILL get better. We now have Steve Yzerman back (sorry Tampa) and he will get our team back on top! She really liked my information and said she was likely to go to the game even though she isn’t a Wings fan. I told her I could help with that– and explained all about Hockey Town, The Joe and the new Little Caesars Arena. I did get a chance to spend some time at the exhibits and they have one dedicated to hockey! Steve Yzerman is even in a video! I need to contact the Michigan Science Center and encourage them to add a hockey exhibit.

I also had the chance to complete my Robotics Merit Badge. We each programmed a robot and raced through a maze that we made. My entire family had the chance to do the programming with me and participate in the race. I had to make it avoid obstacles, too. And of course, I won [>:)] with 48.8 seconds which included a penalty for hitting two blocks. Dad was best at not hitting blocks but his robot was the slowest. We used Dash robots and had to figure out what directions to use and how long to make the robot go for. It was really fun.

After completing the merit badges, we spent the day visiting MOSI. The have really great exhibits. We were able make BSA and Red Wings signs with lights, we learned about moving cargo, how robots can sort a Rubics Cube, and went on a virtual reality ride. There were so many cool things to do and learn. I was surprised by how many different careers there are in the Robotics field.

While we were in Florida, we were also able to visit a lot of attractions. My Uncle Chuck was awesome! He took us all around town. We purchased a Tampa CityPASS at MOSI and I would highly recommend it. It provides for admission to several places – MOSI, Busch Gardens, The Florida Aquarium, ZooTampa at Lowry Park (We didn’t make it here), and Clearwater Marine Aquarium. We also had a chance to see a cruise ship, eat at Cuban restaurant, and so much more. We also had the chance to visit the Scout Shop in Tampa. It was HUGE compared to our shop and everyone was friendly.

I really enjoyed our trip to Florida. I didn’t get to meet a lot of scouts, but I learned a lot and visited new places.
